Will Skipping Breakfast Help Weight Loss?

Back to Health & LifeStyle

Will skipping breakfast help weight loss?No matter how busy you are, no matter what diet rules you set for yourself, it's not a great idea to forgo your breakfast. And if you thought that skipping breakfast is a smart strategy to lose those stubborn inches, well, be forewarned, it may just backfire and do you more harm than good.

Your mom probably didn't scream from the roof tops, but remember she insisted that you never left home without a good breakfast. Why? Because she knew it was the most important meal of the day.

Starting your day with a healthy meal triggers off a chain of positive reactions in your body, It peps up your system, boosts your energy, pumps up your metabolism and keeps you going through the day. A good breakfast provides for one-third of your daily calorie requirement. So make sure that nothing comes between you and your breakfast, every morning!

What happens when you skip your breakfast?

Contrary to belief, skipping breakfast will make you fat! Here's how. Keeping your stomach empty for long hours may make you overly hungry. That's when you will find yourself going on the binge and grabbing whatever in sight. So instead of having a nutritious breakfast, you may end up eating junk food!

Your metabolic rate is sluggish in the morning and if you skip breakfast you will be really low on energy. Your body then uses the fat reserves to convert it into glucose and you can gain weight. A fulfilling breakfast gives your metabolism a good start to burn calories fast.

Not eating anything solid in the morning can make you dull, irritable and listless all day. Studies show that eating breakfast increases alertness and concentration and helps improve memory.

Researchers say that leaving home on an empty stomach increases the risk of heart disease. Obesity, larger fat stores around the stomach and higher cholesterol levels are some of the after-effects of skipping the morning meal.

Enjoy a wholesome breakfast

Your first meal of the day should ideally contain a fine balance of protein, some fiber and a little fat so that it keeps you going till lunch time. Protein can come from eggs, beans or dairy. Fiber can be found in whole grains, vegetables and fruits. A good example of a healthy breakfast might be something simple like a boiled egg, a fruit, and a bowl of whole grain cereal with skimmed milk.

If you are hard-pressed for time to eat breakfast, you could consider staggering it into two smaller meals. Have the boiled egg at home, and an hour or two later, snack on an apple or sip a glass of fresh juice that will not only rev you up but fill your stomach too.

Breakfast is the simplest meal of the day. So if you plan ahead, all it takes is a few extra minutes of your morning.
