The Anti-CCP (Anti-Cyclic Citrullinated Peptide) test detects antibodies directed against citrullinated proteins — a hallmark of the autoimmune process driving rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Anti-CCP antibodies are the most specific blood test for rheumatoid arthritis, with specificity exceeding 95%. Crucially, anti-CCP antibodies can appear in the blood 5–10 years before clinical symptoms of RA develop — making this test a powerful tool for early diagnosis and potentially preventive intervention in at-risk individuals. No fasting required.
Key benefits of this package include:
What Does the Anti-CCP Test (Anti-Cyclic Citrullinated Peptide) Measure?
| Level / Result | Possible Interpretation |
|---|---|
| < 20 U/mL (Negative) | No anti-CCP antibodies detected — RA less likely, but clinical assessment still required; 5–10% of RA patients are anti-CCP negative |
| 20–39 U/mL (Weakly positive) | Low-level anti-CCP — possible early RA or other autoimmune condition; repeat testing and rheumatology consultation advised |
| 40–59 U/mL (Positive) | Anti-CCP antibodies present — highly suggestive of RA; rheumatology referral and clinical evaluation required |
| ≥ 60 U/mL (Strongly positive) | Strongly positive — high specificity for RA; predicts more aggressive, erosive disease course; early specialist intervention important |
Important Note: Anti-CCP positivity is highly specific for RA but is not 100% — rarely, it can be positive in other conditions (tuberculosis, HIV, hepatitis C). A positive anti-CCP result alone does not diagnose RA — diagnosis requires meeting ACR/EULAR criteria based on joint involvement, serology, inflammatory markers, symptom duration, and imaging. A negative anti-CCP does not exclude RA. All results must be reviewed by a rheumatologist or physician.
Anti-CCP vs. Rheumatoid Factor — Which Is Better for RA Diagnosis?: Both Anti-CCP and RF are standard RA biomarkers, but they complement rather than replace each other. Anti-CCP is more specific (95% vs. RF 70%) — fewer false positives. RF is more sensitive — slightly more patients with RA are RF-positive than anti-CCP positive. The most informative combination is testing both: patients who are double-positive (both anti-CCP and RF positive) have the highest specificity for RA and the most aggressive disease prognosis. The 2010 ACR/EULAR RA Classification Criteria include both RF and anti-CCP in the diagnostic scoring system.
