The Bleeding Time & Clotting Time (BT CT) test is a pair of point-of-care coagulation assessments that together evaluate two fundamental aspects of haemostasis — the body's ability to stop bleeding. Bleeding Time assesses platelet function and primary haemostasis (the initial platelet plug formation). Clotting Time assesses the intrinsic coagulation cascade — how long it takes blood to form a stable fibrin clot. Together, they provide a rapid initial screen for bleeding disorders and are widely used as pre-operative screening tests. No fasting required.
Key benefits of this package include:
What Does the Bleeding Time & Clotting Time Test Measure?
| Level / Result | Possible Interpretation |
|---|---|
| BT normal (2–7 min) + CT normal (3–7 min) | Normal primary and secondary haemostasis — no evidence of platelet or coagulation pathway abnormality |
| BT prolonged + CT normal | Platelet abnormality — thrombocytopenia, platelet function disorder (thrombocytopathy), von Willebrand disease, aspirin/NSAID effect |
| BT normal + CT prolonged | Coagulation factor deficiency — haemophilia A or B (Factor VIII or IX deficiency), or other intrinsic pathway factor defects |
| Both BT and CT prolonged | Combined platelet and coagulation defect — severe liver disease, DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulation), combined deficiency |
| BT markedly prolonged (> 15 min) | Severe platelet dysfunction or thrombocytopenia — clinical evaluation essential before any procedure |
Important Note: BT and CT are screening tests with limited sensitivity — they may miss mild coagulation disorders. A normal BT and CT do not guarantee no bleeding risk. Abnormal results require follow-up with more specific tests: Platelet Count, PT (Prothrombin Time), APTT, von Willebrand Factor assay, and specific clotting factor assays. All results should be reviewed by a physician or haematologist before procedures.
BT CT in the Modern Coagulation Laboratory: While BT and CT remain widely used as cost-effective initial screens — particularly pre-operatively in settings where comprehensive coagulation panels are not routinely available — modern haematology practice increasingly relies on PT (Prothrombin Time), APTT (Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time), and platelet function analyser (PFA-100) for more sensitive and standardised haemostasis assessment. At Medall, if BT CT results are abnormal, your physician may order PT, APTT, Platelet Count, and further specialised coagulation tests for complete evaluation.
