The Glucose Postprandial (1.5 Hours) test measures blood glucose exactly 90 minutes (1.5 hours) after starting a meal. While the standard postprandial glucose test uses a 2-hour timepoint, some clinical protocols — particularly in gestational diabetes management and certain research settings — specify a 1.5-hour measurement. This test is ordered when a physician has explicitly requested a 90-minute post-meal glucose assessment. The clinical interpretation differs from the standard 2-hour PPBS. No fasting required. Sample timing is critical.
Key benefits of this package include:
What Does the Glucose — Postprandial (1.5 Hours) Test Measure?
| Level / Result | Possible Interpretation |
|---|---|
| < 140 mg/dL at 1.5 hours | Within normal range at this timepoint — confirm target with treating physician |
| 140–199 mg/dL at 1.5 hours | Elevated — may indicate impaired glucose tolerance; clinical interpretation depends on protocol and context |
| ≥ 200 mg/dL at 1.5 hours | Significantly elevated — post-meal hyperglycaemia; clinical review required; correlation with 2-hour PPBS and HbA1c |
Important Note: The 1.5-hour postprandial glucose does not have universally standardised reference ranges — interpretation depends entirely on the clinical protocol being used. Always confirm the target range and clinical context with the ordering physician. If a standard 2-hour PPBS was intended, the test should be repeated at the correct timepoint.
Post-Bariatric Surgery Glucose Monitoring — When 1.5 Hours Matters: After gastric bypass surgery (Roux-en-Y), food passes rapidly from the stomach to the small intestine, causing an accelerated glucose absorption pattern — blood glucose may peak at 30–60 minutes (much earlier than normal) and then fall rapidly, sometimes into hypoglycaemic range by 90–120 minutes (late dumping syndrome). Standard 2-hour PPBS may therefore miss the early peak and overestimate control. In post-bariatric patients, earlier timepoints (1 hour, 1.5 hours) and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) provide a more complete glucose profile.
