The Postprandial Blood Sugar (PPBS) test measures blood glucose exactly 2 hours after a standard meal — assessing how effectively the body's insulin response clears the glucose load from carbohydrate digestion. Post-meal (postprandial) glucose spikes are an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease and are often detectable before fasting glucose becomes abnormal — making the PPBS test a clinically important complement to FBS for both diabetes diagnosis and management. Sample must be collected exactly 2 hours after starting to eat. No fasting required.
Key benefits of this package include:
What Does the Glucose Postprandial Test (PPBS) Measure?
| Level / Result | Possible Interpretation |
|---|---|
| < 140 mg/dL (Normal) | Normal postprandial glucose clearance — adequate insulin response to meal |
| 140–199 mg/dL (Impaired Glucose Tolerance) | Prediabetes — post-meal glucose higher than normal; lifestyle intervention recommended; monitor with FBS and HbA1c |
| ≥ 200 mg/dL (Diabetes range) | Significant postprandial hyperglycaemia — consistent with diabetes; confirm with FBS and HbA1c |
| < 180 mg/dL in treated diabetic | Within ADA postprandial target — good meal-time glucose control |
| > 180 mg/dL in treated diabetic | Above postprandial target — review meal composition, timing, medication, and adherence |
Important Note: PPBS timing is critical — late or early sample collection significantly affects the result. The patient must eat a normal-sized meal (not unusually large or small), take their diabetes medications as usual, and avoid unusual physical activity between the meal and sample collection. PPBS should be interpreted alongside FBS and HbA1c for a complete glucose assessment. All results must be reviewed by a physician.
Why Post-Meal Glucose Matters as Much as Fasting Glucose: HbA1c (the 3-month glucose average) is made up of both fasting and postprandial glucose contributions. In well-controlled patients, postprandial glucose spikes often contribute disproportionately to elevated HbA1c even when fasting glucose appears controlled. This is particularly common with carbohydrate-rich Indian diets (rice, rotis, and sugary beverages) that produce large postprandial spikes. Targeted monitoring of PPBS allows dietary and medication adjustments specifically directed at post-meal glucose — the most under-addressed component of diabetes management.
