The Haemoglobin (Hb) test measures the concentration of haemoglobin — the iron-containing protein inside red blood cells responsible for transporting oxygen from the lungs to every tissue in the body — in the blood. It is the primary and most direct measure of anaemia: a low haemoglobin means reduced oxygen delivery to tissues, causing fatigue, pallor, breathlessness, and impaired physical and cognitive performance. Haemoglobin testing is one of the most widely performed diagnostic tests in the world. No fasting required.
Key benefits of this package include:
What Does the Haemoglobin (Hb) Test Measure?
| Level / Result | Possible Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Normal (Males > 13.5, Females > 12.0 g/dL) | Normal oxygen-carrying capacity — no anaemia |
| 10.0–12.0 g/dL (Mild anaemia — females) | Mild anaemia — fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance; identify and treat cause |
| 8.0–10.0 g/dL (Moderate anaemia) | Moderate anaemia — symptoms at rest and on exertion; cause identification and treatment essential |
| 6.0–8.0 g/dL (Severe anaemia) | Severe anaemia — significant symptoms; transfusion consideration depending on clinical state |
| < 6.0 g/dL (Very severe anaemia) | Life-threatening — cardiac compensation at risk; transfusion almost always required |
| Above normal (Polycythaemia) | Males > 17.5 g/dL, Females > 15.5 g/dL — polycythaemia vera, dehydration, COPD, high altitude |
Important Note: A low Hb confirms anaemia but does not identify the cause — red cell indices (MCV, MCH) from a full CBC are needed to characterise the type of anaemia. Clinical symptoms of anaemia do not always correlate with the Hb level — a gradually developing chronic anaemia may be well-tolerated at Hb 7 g/dL while an acute haemorrhage at Hb 9 g/dL causes severe symptoms. All results must be reviewed by a physician.
India's Anaemia Crisis — Why Hb Screening Matters More Here: India has one of the highest burdens of anaemia in the world. Surveys show over 50% of Indian women and over 50% of children under 5 are anaemic. Iron deficiency — from inadequate dietary intake, poor absorption, and increased requirements in pregnancy and adolescence — is the dominant cause, followed by Vitamin B12 deficiency (particularly in vegetarians), thalassaemia trait, and chronic disease. National health programmes (POSHAN Abhiyaan, Anaemia Mukt Bharat) make Hb screening a public health priority. Medall's affordable Hb testing supports universal anaemia screening across South India.
