The Hepatitis C Virus Antibody (Anti-HCV) Rapid test detects antibodies produced by the immune system in response to infection with the Hepatitis C virus (HCV) — a blood-borne virus that primarily attacks the liver and is a leading global cause of chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. Hepatitis C is often called the 'silent epidemic' because most infected individuals have no symptoms for years or decades while the virus silently damages the liver. This test is a critical first-line screening tool for detecting HCV infection. No fasting required.
Key benefits of this package include:
What Does the Hepatitis C Virus Antibody (Anti-HCV) Test — Rapid Measure?
| Level / Result | Possible Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Non-Reactive (Negative) | No HCV antibodies detected — no evidence of current or past HCV infection (note: window period applies — retest if recent exposure) |
| Reactive (Positive) | HCV antibodies detected — requires confirmatory HCV RNA (PCR) test to determine if infection is active (current) or was resolved in the past |
| HCV RNA Positive (after reactive antibody) | Active HCV infection confirmed — specialist referral and treatment evaluation required |
| HCV RNA Negative (after reactive antibody) | Past resolved HCV infection, or false-positive antibody result — clinical assessment required |
Important Note: A reactive Anti-HCV result alone does not confirm active infection — approximately 15–25% of people who have had HCV clear the infection naturally and remain antibody-positive with no active virus. HCV RNA PCR is essential to confirm active infection. Conversely, during the 'window period' (first 8–12 weeks after exposure), antibodies may not yet be detectable — a negative result does not exclude very recent infection. All results must be reviewed by a physician.
Hepatitis C Is Now Curable: The development of Direct-Acting Antivirals (DAAs) — including drugs like sofosbuvir, ledipasvir, velpatasvir, and glecaprevir/pibrentasvir — has transformed HCV treatment. These oral medications achieve sustained virological response (SVR — effectively a cure) in over 95% of patients, regardless of HCV genotype, in just 8–12 weeks. Unlike older interferon-based regimens, DAAs are well-tolerated with minimal side effects. Early detection through Anti-HCV screening is therefore more important than ever — because a cure is readily available.
