The Potassium (K+) test measures the level of potassium — the most abundant positively charged ion inside body cells — in your blood. Potassium is essential for normal heart rhythm, nerve signalling, and muscle contraction. Both low potassium (hypokalaemia) and high potassium (hyperkalaemia) can trigger serious, life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias, making this one of the most clinically urgent electrolyte tests. No fasting required.
Key benefits of this package include:
What Does the Potassium (K+) Test Measure?
| Level / Result | Possible Interpretation |
|---|---|
| 3.5–5.0 mEq/L (Normal) | Healthy potassium balance — normal cardiac and muscle function |
| 3.0–3.5 mEq/L (Mild hypokalaemia) | Mild potassium deficiency — common with diuretic use; dietary supplementation often adequate |
| 2.5–3.0 mEq/L (Moderate hypokalaemia) | Significant deficiency — risk of muscle weakness, constipation, cardiac ectopics; medical review needed |
| < 2.5 mEq/L (Severe hypokalaemia) | Critical — life-threatening arrhythmia risk; urgent IV potassium replacement required |
| 5.0–6.0 mEq/L (Mild hyperkalaemia) | Mildly elevated — review medications; repeat test to confirm (haemolysis can falsely elevate) |
| 6.0–6.5 mEq/L (Moderate hyperkalaemia) | Significant elevation — ECG monitoring required; dietary potassium restriction and medical review |
| > 6.5 mEq/L (Severe hyperkalaemia) | Critical — high risk of fatal cardiac arrhythmia; emergency treatment required immediately |
Important Note: Potassium results must be interpreted alongside kidney function (creatinine, eGFR), medications, ECG, and clinical symptoms. Haemolysed samples can falsely elevate potassium — if the sample is haemolysed, a repeat test will be recommended. Critical values require immediate medical attention.
Why Haemolysis Matters for Potassium: Red blood cells are packed with potassium. If blood cells rupture during or after collection (haemolysis — which can occur with difficult draws, shaking, or delayed processing), intracellular potassium floods the serum and produces a falsely high reading. Medall's certified phlebotomists are trained to minimise haemolysis, and our laboratory flags haemolysed samples for repeat collection — ensuring your results are clinically accurate.
