The Complete Stool Analysis is the most thorough examination of a stool (faecal) sample available — covering physical characteristics (colour, consistency, mucus), chemical analysis (occult blood, pH, reducing substances), and detailed microscopic examination for ova, cysts, trophozoites, larvae of parasites, as well as red blood cells, white blood cells, epithelial cells, and fat globules. It provides a comprehensive picture of digestive tract health — detecting parasitic infections, gastrointestinal bleeding, inflammatory bowel disease, malabsorption, and infections. No fasting required.
Key benefits of this package include:
What Does the Stool Analysis — Complete Measure?
| Level / Result | Possible Interpretation |
|---|---|
| All parameters normal | No significant GI pathology detected on stool examination |
| Occult blood positive | Hidden blood in stool — colorectal cancer, polyps, peptic ulcer, IBD, or haemorrhoids; colonoscopy referral recommended |
| Ova/cysts detected | Parasitic infection — species identified guides antiparasitic treatment (e.g., E. histolytica → metronidazole; Giardia → tinidazole) |
| WBCs elevated (> 5/HPF) | Inflammatory diarrhoea — infectious colitis (Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter), IBD; stool culture recommended |
| RBCs present + WBCs elevated | Dysentery — invasive bacterial infection (Shigella, E. histolytica) or severe IBD; urgent evaluation |
| Fat globules abundant (Steatorrhoea) | Fat malabsorption — pancreatic exocrine insufficiency, coeliac disease, tropical sprue; further workup required |
| Reducing substances positive (Infants) | Carbohydrate malabsorption — lactose intolerance, congenital disaccharidase deficiency |
Important Note: A single stool examination may miss intermittent parasitic infections — three separate samples on consecutive days significantly improves detection sensitivity for ova and cysts. Fresh stool is critical for detecting motile trophozoites (E. histolytica, Giardia) which die rapidly outside the body. Occult blood positivity requires endoscopic investigation regardless of the apparent cause. All results must be reviewed by a physician.
Parasitic Infections in India — Why Stool Testing Matters: India has one of the world's highest burdens of intestinal parasitic infections — affecting hundreds of millions, particularly in areas with inadequate sanitation and water safety. The most clinically significant include Entamoeba histolytica (amoebic dysentery and amoebic liver abscess), Giardia lamblia (giardiasis — causing chronic diarrhoea and malabsorption), Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm — extremely common in children), hookworm (causing iron deficiency anaemia), and Strongyloides (which can cause life-threatening hyperinfection in immunocompromised individuals). Stool microscopy remains the most accessible diagnostic tool for these infections.
