The Uric Acid test measures the level of uric acid — a waste product formed when the body breaks down purines (found in certain foods and body cells) — in the blood. Persistently elevated uric acid (hyperuricaemia) causes urate crystals to deposit in joints (causing gout) and kidneys (causing uric acid kidney stones). Important Note: Uric acid levels fluctuate throughout the day and can be affected by diet, alcohol, medications, and hydration. A single elevated reading does not always indicate gout — clinical symptoms, joint examination, and sometimes synovial fluid analysis are needed to confirm the diagnosis. Results should always be reviewed by a physician.
Gout vs. Pseudo-gout: While gout is caused by monosodium urate crystal deposition (elevated uric acid), pseudo-gout is caused by calcium pyrophosphate crystal deposition — and serum uric acid levels are normal in pseudo-gout. If a patient has acute joint inflammation with normal uric acid, pseudo-gout or other arthritis diagnoses should be considered. Serum uric acid alone cannot diagnose gout — the gold standard remains synovial fluid microscopy showing negatively birefringent crystals.
