The Urine Microalbumin Spot Sample test detects tiny amounts of the protein albumin leaking into urine — amounts too small to be detected by routine dipstick urinalysis, but clinically significant as the earliest detectable sign of kidney damage. Microalbuminuria is a critical early warning marker of diabetic nephropathy and hypertensive kidney disease, often appearing years before kidney function tests (creatinine, eGFR) become abnormal. Annual screening is recommended for all diabetics and hypertensives.
Key benefits of this package include:
What Does the Urine Microalbumin — Spot Sample Measure?
| Level / Result | Possible Interpretation |
|---|---|
| < 30 mg/g (Normal — A1 CKD category) | Normal albumin excretion — no microalbuminuria |
| 30–300 mg/g (Microalbuminuria — A2 CKD category) | Early kidney damage — high-risk; treatment to prevent progression strongly recommended |
| > 300 mg/g (Macroalbuminuria / Overt proteinuria — A3) | Established significant kidney damage — nephrology referral and intensified management |
Important Note: A single elevated microalbumin result should be confirmed with two more tests over 3–6 months, as transient elevation can occur with urinary tract infection, fever, intense exercise, menstruation, or acute illness. Persistent microalbuminuria (2 of 3 positive results) is the clinically meaningful finding. All results should be reviewed by a physician.
The '30-300' Rule and Why Early Detection Saves Kidneys: The progression of diabetic kidney disease follows a predictable path — normal albumin → microalbuminuria → macroalbuminuria → declining eGFR → end-stage kidney disease. The critical intervention window is the microalbuminuria stage. At this point, optimal blood pressure control (target < 130/80 mmHg), blood sugar management (HbA1c < 7%), and ACE inhibitor or ARB therapy can halt or even reverse early kidney damage. Waiting until creatinine rises significantly misses this opportunity.
