An Abdomen Ultrasound (also called Upper Abdominal Ultrasound or USG Abdomen) is a real-time imaging scan of the major organs in the upper abdominal cavity — the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, and kidneys — using high-frequency sound waves. No radiation. No injections. It is the most widely ordered abdominal imaging test — providing a comprehensive, non-invasive view of organ size, texture, blood flow, and structural abnormalities in a single 20–30 minute scan. It is included as a standard parameter in most of Medall's comprehensive health checkup packages from the Supreme level upward. Important preparation: 4–6 hours of fasting is required for clear gallbladder imaging (bile accumulates during fasting, making gallstones and gallbladder wall changes visible). Water is permitted.
Key benefits of this package include:
Fatty liver disease (Hepatic Steatosis) — increased liver echogenicity, the most common finding
Liver cirrhosis — coarsened echotexture, nodular surface, portal hypertension signs
Liver cysts — simple fluid-filled lesions (common and usually benign)
Liver haemangiomas — benign vascular tumours (most common liver tumour)
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) — solid liver masses requiring further evaluation
Liver metastases — multiple lesions in patients with known primary cancer
Hepatomegaly — enlarged liver
Gallstones (cholelithiasis) — echogenic stones with posterior acoustic shadowing
Gallbladder polyps — mucosal projections requiring monitoring
Acute cholecystitis — gallbladder wall thickening, pericholecystic fluid, Murphy's sign
Biliary duct dilatation — suggests bile duct obstruction (stone, stricture, or tumour)
Gallbladder sludge — thick bile material
Pancreatitis — enlarged, oedematous pancreas with peripancreatic fluid
Pancreatic cysts — fluid collections requiring monitoring
Pancreatic masses — solid lesions requiring CT/MRI evaluation
Splenomegaly — enlarged spleen from portal hypertension, infections, or haematological disease
Splenic cysts or infarcts
Accessory spleen (common normal variant)
Renal cortical cysts | Hydronephrosis | Renal masses | Kidney size assessment
